01.07.2024

April 27th marked the conclusion of the 'Swat Girls in Action!' course, organized in Pakistan by Mountain Wilderness International, in partnership with the International Association for Mediterranean and Oriental Studies (ISMEO) and the Italian Academic Alpine Club (CAAI). This initiative was a collaborative effort with the Government Post Graduate College for Girls in Saidu Sharif, Swat, under the auspices of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa regional government.

The course aimed to introduce 24 girls, aged 18 to 24, to mountain activities such as sport climbing on rock walls, setting up tents, orienteering with a compass, reading topographical maps, and visits to ancient monuments hidden in wooded side valleys. This combination of nature, sport and culture was conducted under the banner of active protection and conservation of the mountain environment, which is the core mission of Mountain Wilderness International.

All participants and instructors in the course were women. The instructors included Francesca Colesanti, Chiara Delpino, Susanna Gonella, Ayesha Hinna, Concep Mirò, Elisa Peyrot and Patrizia Romagnolo. Carlo Alberto Pinelli, Head of Mountain Wilderness' Asian Desk, managed the organization of the course, with the support of journalist Fazal Khaliq and college headmaster Bakht Tasleem.

The course concluded with a festive ceremony where certificates of attendance were awarded. All participants completed the training, qualifying them to lead school groups in exploring the natural and cultural history of the country.

Special thanks are extended to the Mountain Partnership Secretariat and Banca Sella for their support, as well as to Italian manufacturers SCARPA for providing mountain and climbing footwear and Ferrino for supplying mountain equipment.
