Training course launched on Understanding Upland Watershed Management

13.02.2013

The sixth IPROMO training programme on sustainable mountain development will take place 12-22 July in Ormea, Italy, jointly organized by the Mountain Partnership Secretariat at the Food and Agriculture Organization and the Faculty of Agriculture of the University of Turin.

The course will provide ten days of full immersion learning for 30 selected participants on the importance of upland watershed management and the approaches and methods for promoting a new generation of watershed management.

Focusing on the main features of watershed management in particular resource management and land use systems, it will look at the linkages with climate change, with disaster risk management, with food security and nutrition, and improving livelihoods and economic activities in a watershed. It will also include lectures on governance, institutions and gender issues.

Course instructors will include university professors and officers from regional and international organizations dealing with sustainable mountain development, and the course itself will comprise lectures, practical work and field trips.

About 30 professionals will be admitted to the course and preference will be given to participants coming from countries and organizations which are members of the Mountain Partnership.

This course is mainly targeting technical officers, so applicants from the academic world will not be given priority. Participants from developing countries are encouraged to apply.

The total cost of the course (inclusive of full board, accommodation, taxes, teaching equipment, internal transfers but excluding travel costs) is 3,000 Euros. A limited number of scholarships – full (on site and travel costs) and partial (on-site only) - are available for selected participants from developing countries.

Excellent knowledge of English, a university degree possibly in a technical area such as agriculture, forestry, biology, geology or geography, and relevant working experience are key requisites.
