World Environment Day celebration in Himalayas

RCE Srinagar in collaboration with CEE Himalaya & JSW Foundation supported by UNICEF celebrated World Environment Day (WED) 2015 across Indian Himalayan Region and the foothills of Himalaya in Uttar Pradesh bordering to Nepal. Various awareness and action programmes were undertaken reaching out to a large a section of society. WED was observed in Hamirpur in Himachal Pradesh by cleaning of public parks, planting of saplings, adopting of trees for caring them, nature walk, best out of waste, holding seminar and rallies, wall writing and slogan writing competitions in order to raise awareness and reinforce people’s commitment to environmental protection. In the same district, celebrations were also done by two Paryavaran Mitra Schools, the Him Academy Public School, Vikas Nagar and Him Academy Public School, Heeranagar.

A rally by more than 50 students and their teachers was taken out skirting around the habitations in the perimeter of the school. The placards and posters made by students bearing messages on conservation of the environment and various other environmental issues were displayed. Another group of 40 students with 2 teachers visited the nearby forest to clean a patch of it by collecting Chir Pine (Pinus roxburghii) needles, a major cause of forest fires in summers. Students of 5th and 6th standard went for the nature walk in the nearby parks and museums in green dress. After the outdoor action activities the students returned to their school and classes and participated in various events like ‘Best from waste’, slogan writing, craft making etc. The articles made by students under ‘best from waste’ included bowls, cardboard, magic balls, piggy bank, pen stand, fruit basket and masks from waste paper and other materials collected from the waste of the school and were displayed in the school.

Slogans that bagged prizes were “PED LAGAO, PED BACHAO, VATAVARAN KO KHUSH BANAO” (Plant Trees, Save Tress, Keep Environment Healthy) “ NANGI DHARTI KARE PUKAR, PED LAGAKAR KARO SHINGAR” (Denuded earth warrants tree plantation to make it green)  “PEDON SE VAYU, VAYU SE AAYU” (Trees give oxygen and oxygen gives life). Senior 10 students adopted one tree each located on their way to school.

In Balrampur, Uttar Pradesh the block government officials, local communities along with representatives of the panchayats and the students participated in a cleanliness drive cleaning local market areas, paths and public spaces. Open defecation was also discussed and its ill effects highlighted; construction and use of toilet was promoted to help people have good sanitation contributing to their good health, beauty and prosperity, also saving the environment. The events were covered by the local print media.
