Mountain course focuses on food security

13.07.2015

Twenty-four participants from 22 countries on three continents took part in the eighth edition of  the International Programme on Research and Training on Sustainable Management of Mountain Areas (IPROMO) from 24 June to 3 July 2015. The course was organized by the Mountain Partnership Secretariat, the University of Turin, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) with financial support from the City of Ormea and a contribution from the FAO International Year of family Farming Unit.

This year’s IPROMO course was focused on food security in mountains, looking at the prevailing mountain economic systems, the impact of global changes, the role of soils and water, gender, governance, land tenure issues, and other related topics.

The course was held in Ormea and Edolo, both in northern Italy, and targeted researchers and technicians from all over the world, providing a technical and scientific overview of the issues related to food security and nutrition in mountain areas. The programme also included a visit to  Expo 2015 in Milan, where a closing ceremony and a press conference  took place.

“On behalf of the course participants, we would like to thank the organizers of the IPROMO training, the Italian people for their hospitality,” said Elbegzaya Batjargal, regional coordinator of Mountain Partnership in Central Asia, during the press conference. “It has been a good learning path for all of us and we would like to thank the professors from both universities: Torino and Milano, other lecturers equally for bringing up many different aspects of the food security topic and communities of Ormea and Edolo, everyone who made our stay comfortable and enjoyable. The presentation by Italian Forest Corps has been the most impressive one for me, and I think my friends also share this. I do really think that if every inspector, and ranger took their job as the Italian Forest Corps with the far-sighted vision, our planet could have been saved and it could have been the best place to enjoy the quality life for all of us. Each of us is taking back home a bit of Italy and memories of our stay”, she said.

The IPROMO programme was created in 2006 by the Mountain Partnership Secretariat of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the University of Turin at the request of several Mountain Partnership members who had identified the lack of mountain related capacity development programmes as a concrete obstacle to the sustainable development of mountains around the world.

Under the patronage of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the IPROMO course is organized through close collaboration among the town of Ormea, the  Institut Agricole Règional of Valle d’Aosta  and the Edolo-based interdepartmental centre on Mountains of the University of Milan.

IPROMO aims at strengthening the capacity of countries and institutions that belong to the Mountain Partnership and targets mainly technicians, experts, and decision-makers from areas that are potentially more sensitive to global change impacts.
