Action called for livestock in mountains

28.06.2016

In order to facilitate an open and inclusive platform for dialogue and building consensus on global sustainability issues related to livestock, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), together with partner organizations, held the 6th Multiple-Stakeholder Partnership meeting on 20-23 June in Panama City, Panama. During the meeting, the future of the Global Agenda and its role in the development of new tools and better policies was discussed. Also discussed were the efforts needed to reach the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) concerning livestock.

Fundación CoMunidad, an NGO that belongs to the Mountain Partnership, called for action to promote sustainable livestock management in mountain regions in the 6th Multi-Stakeholder Partnership meeting as mountain peoples are among the world’s poorest and hungriest. In developing countries, a vast majority live below the poverty line and mountains host approximately 25 percent of terrestrial biodiversity as well as vital genetic resources for key crops and livestock. Land use change and climate change are seriously threatening these global assets.

The 6th Multiple-Stakeholder Partnership meeting on the Global Agenda for Sustainable Livestock brought together representatives of public, private, legislative sector, civil society, international organizations from all regions of the world. The final declaration of the meeting pledged to generate widespread benefits for people and the planet, including the recognition of the potential contribution of livestock to sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems to the reversal of environmental degradation, climate change and for biodiversity.
