Call for papers on shifting cultivation

10.04.2017

Work has begun on a new book, focused on “Farmer Innovations and Best Practices by Shifting Cultivators in Asia-Pacific”. The Editor of the forthcoming volume invites those working with or studying shifting cultivation in the Asia-Pacific region to submit papers and supporting photographs documenting and analysing farmer innovations and best practices within shifting cultivation systems.

The book will be the final volume in a trilogy of a collection of scientific works on the practice of shifting cultivation, focusing on Asia and the Pacific. The final book will explore ways in which today’s shifting cultivators are improving their systems with technical and social innovations, either in response to pressures such as climate change and land shortages, or refined over centuries as farmers continuously searched for better ways to manage their land and forests.

The editorial team is accepting papers of approximately 6 000 words in length, with careful references required as well as a professionally-drawn map of the research area. High-quality, coloured photographs of farmer innovations and best practices in shifting cultivation in Asia-Pacific, specifically of farmers working in their fields, are also sought. To find out more or to express an intention to contribute to this volume, please contact the Editor, Malcolm Cairns, at [email protected]. Contributions are due by 31 December 2017.
