Romania celebrates National Mountain Day

11.10.2022

Romania celebrates National Mountain Day every year on 14 September, which marks the end of the traditional grazing season in the Romanian Carpathian Mountains. "Mountains matter! Keep the mountains clean" was the theme of National Mountain Day 2022.

Between 14 and 17 September 2022, Romania hosted the second edition of its national environmental awareness raising campaign on mountain people and environments. This year's event was held under the auspices of the International Year of Sustainable Mountain Development 2022.

The National Agency of Mountain Areas, in partnership with municipalities and local councils and with the support of the prefectures and county councils as well as decentralized public institutions and services of the ministries in the mountain areas, initiated a series of green and awareness-raising initiatives. Educational activities were carried out in schools, and scientific symposiums were held in some universities and research institutes. The purpose of these activities was to draw attention to the role and importance of mountain ecosystems, increase awareness of the opportunities in mountains, promote environmental protection, and preserve local traditions and crafts.

Community members of all ages from both rural and urban areas of the mountainous counties of Alba, Argeș, Cluj, Hunedoara, Maramureș, Mehedinți, Neamț, Sibiu, Suceava, Vâlcea and Vrancea participated in the activities. Additional participants included specialists of the National Agency of Mountain Area, representatives of the county and local public authorities, public institutions, schools, high schools, universities, research institutes, children's clubs, associations, non-governmental organizations and volunteers from mountain localities.

National Mountain Day was established by decision 715/2002 of the Government of Romania.
