Trends in climate adaptation solutions for mountain regions

04.10.2024

Mountain Partnership member, Adaptation to Altitude, has published a new study that reviews climate adaptation
solutions in mountain regions using data from the Adaptation at Altitude Solutions Portal. The study addresses the urgent need to document adaptation progress in these areas. Using a data-driven approach, the research explores the characteristics, feasibility and potential of these solutions. Findings reveal a predominant focus on addressing droughts and floods, aligning with the IPCC’s emphasis on water-related impacts in mountains. Popular solutions include watershed management, education and land use practices, which have a positive impact on project acceptance and reduce the risk of
maladaptation.

Agricultural land and forests are key ecosystems where these solutions are implemented, often tied to education and land use changes. The solutions contribute to several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Sendai Framework targets, emphasizing the importance of bridging gaps between policy and implementation.

The research also highlights ongoing challenges, such as gender inequality, difficulties with upscaling, and limited evidence of mainstreaming. Despite this, the study underscores the value of co-developing adaptation solution portals to deepen understanding and integrate local needs and knowledge. It emphasizes the need for collaborative efforts to address the complex impacts of climate change in mountain regions.
