Mountains at IUCN World Conservation Congress27.06.2016The World Commission on Protected Areas (WCPA) Mountains Group of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) will highlight the value of mountain protected areas at the next IUCN World Conservation Congress in Hawaii, USA, in September 2016. Among the events being planned is a Knowledge Café, called “Mountain Protected Areas: Leadership for Adapting to a Changing World”. Mountain Partnership members and friends are welcome to take part in the Knowledge Café, a facilitated group conversation and exchange of ideas on 4 September. The meeting is expected develop a deeper understanding of the threats and future challenges to conservation of mountain protected areas around the world by drawing on the wisdom and knowledge of the international mountains network and its various organizations and experts. Knowledge Café The group will collaboratively develop actions that will be put to the IUCN/WCPA for support to contribute to achieving the goals of the IUCN 2017-2020 Programme. Engaging and provocative questions for discussion will be framed around: • Protected area coverage in mountains: Prioritizing and activating protection of mountainous Key Biodiversity Areas (KBAs) that are not protected. • Climate: Building resilience to the impact of projected climate futures on the alpine belt of mountain protected areas.
