The World Mountain Forum 2018 in Kyrgyzstan

Chaired by the First Deputy Head of the Apparatus of the Government of the Kyrgyz Republic Shamil Asymbekov, the first meeting of the Organizing Committee for the upcoming World Mountain Forum 2018 (WMF2018) took place 10 August 2018.

This Organizing Committee was established by the Kyrgyz Government on 4 June 2018 to successfully prepare and conduct an important international event, co-organized by the Government of the Kyrgyz Republic and the University of Central Asia and is scheduled for 23 – 26 October 2018.

Following the agenda of the meeting of the Organizing Committee, an Inter-Ministerial work plan was discussed and approved. The work plan determines the interaction of ministries, responsibilities and the timetable for the implementation of activities for the preparation and holding of the WMF2018. In addition, a report on the selection process of the participants of the forum and the development of the forum program was presented to the members of the Organizing committee. Other organizational issues were also considered and recommendations for the implementation of the work plan were made.

According to the organizers, within the framework of the World Mountain Forum, the Youth Mountain Forum will also be held jointly with UNICEF, and the MountainEXPO titled #MountainsMatter will be open to the public in the Museum of Fine Arts.

The World Mountain Forum 2018 “Mountains in a Changing World: Strengthening Partnerships and Pathways towards a Thriving Mountain Future” is the fourth in the series of World Mountain Forums (WMF), following three previous World Mountain Forums, each in different mountain regions of the world – in Switzerland in 2011, in Peru in 2014 and in Uganda two years ago.

The series of World Mountain Forum is a joint initiative of the mountain countries of the world aimed at advancing the sustainable mountain development agenda (SMD) and striving to integrate mountain related issues into global negotiations processes.
