Exploring mountain food systems

The newest issue of Mountain Research and Development: Food Security and Sustainable Development in Mountains, Vol 38, No 4 is now available online. Papers in this issue cover various topics including transitioning towards sustainable food systems, including the nutrition-sensitive agriculture approach tested in several countries, and resilient livelihoods replacing subsistence agriculture in Pakistan. Additionally, mountain food systems face challenges, an example of this can be seen in studies that observe the impact roads in Nepal have on the nutrition quality and erosion of social institutions. These challenges are caused by high socioeconomic and cultural dynamics of the area. Further papers explore the contribution of caterpillar fungus to livelihoods in India, the economic performance of walnut forests in Kyrgyzstan, elevation differences in dwarf pine cover in Slovakia, bacteriological characteristics of drinking water in Nepal, changing glacier conditions on mountaineering in New Zealand, the impact of ski tourism on wildlife in Poland, and the dynamics of land use change in the Argentinian puna.

The Mountain Research Development journal publishes peer-reviewed articles presenting original research on mountain environments and people, sustainable mountain development, and mountain development experiences. Material ranges widely, from topics in the natural sciences to anthropological, economic and sociocultural issues. The target audiences are the scientific community and policy and decision-makers.
