Milan dedicates entire week to mountains

25.10.2019

The 2019 Milano Montagna Week, held from 14 to 20 October, brought together mountain lovers and outdoor enthusiasts to celebrate and commemorate the value of these majestic landscapes. From the Municipality of Milan to sports organizations to the local children’s museum, all sectors of society were involved to dedicate the week to mountains.

City-wide mountain and outdoors related events and activities took place throughout the week across the city of Milan at schools, libraries, shops, gyms and more.

The week concluded with the much-anticipated main event: the Sustainable Outdoor Days, held from 17 to 20 October at the BASE cultural centre.

The Mountain Partnership took part in promoting the Milano Montagne Week, and Rosalaura Romeo, Mountain Partnership Secretariat Programme Officer, led a discussion on 20 October about creating a global movement for mountains and their populations.

“The Milano Montagne Week has revealed a great deal of potential for future collaborations with the Mountain Partnership,” Romeo says. “There is a lot of energy for mountains here, which goes beyond a love of mountain sports: people in Italy are passionate about scientific advancements for the protection and sustainability of mountain areas.”

These four days were focused on athletes, adventure and environmental sustainability. The impressive turnout included sustainability advocates such as well-known outdoor clothing and gear company Patagonia.

Engaging activities took place throughout these days, including talks with athletes such as award-winning alpinist Krzysztof Wielicki; free gear check-ups; countless international film premieres; interactive climbing and bouldering walls; an exhibition about freeriding; and much more.
