Mountain summer school to be held in Ukraine

The Grassroots Institute, alongside its partners and collaborators, is holding a Summer Field School and Workshop on Mountain Ecosystems and Resource Management (FSc MER 2020) next July in Ukraine’s Carpathian Mountains. Future leaders – including researchers, students, practitioners and scholars – may apply to this 10-day international programme.

Thirty to forty participants will be selected to build knowledge on contemporary topics relevant to the world’s mountain regions, from the Himalayas to the Rockies. The training will examine mountain ecosystems in the contexts of human development and natural resources. The programme takes an intersectional approach to natural resource management, considering social, political, economic, cultural and gender dimensions.

The summer school instructors include professors, scientists and professionals from governmental institutions, non-governmental organizations and the private sector, representing a total of 14 countries. The instructors will share their expertise in fields as varied as soil and water, geography, law and policymaking, forestry and more.

Instructors will cover 18 contemporary and relevant topics, such as wildlife management, mountain sustainability and forest ecology. The trainings are designed to be interactive and experiential, using a wide range of teaching formats, including field visits and case studies.

The programme aims to build the capacity of young teachers, students, scholars and early career practitioners in sustainable mountain development, and equip them with the knowledge, tools and skills to meet the challenges of sustainable use of natural mountain resources.

Summer school participants are required to develop an individual action plan for their own field situations, integrating what they learned from the course.
