Italy hosts engineering and geology Summer School 2020

24.01.2020

This summer, the International Association for Engineering Geology and the Environment (IAEG) will hold their first official Summer School in the Aosta Valley region of northwest Italy. The 2020 Summer School is hosted by the IAEG Italian National Group and the Mountain Partnership is an endorser of the course.

From 13 to 18 July 2020, students will analyze infrastructures and their impacts on the environment in an alpine region. The Aosta Valley lies in the Western Alps, bordering France and Switzerland.

This free course targets doctoral students, with limited availability for master’s students and post-doctoral researchers. The objective of the international Summer School is to organize training sessions for 30 young engineering and geology students of various backgrounds. Applications from developing nations are encouraged.

The training sessions will propose engineering geology problems and participants will address their possible solutions and learn the best practices. Students will analyze the environmental impacts of varying infrastructures, such as dams and tunnels, and other construction projects realized in the past century in alpine regions. The Summer School will also instruct students on the correct approaches to defining the geological model, designing infrastructure, proper communication and the appropriate maintenance of these infrastructures.

Following the Summer School, participants will be encouraged to join the IAEG community to maintain a close network of international contacts in the fields of engineering and geology.
