Advocating for mountain food systems in Cameroon

04.03.2020

The International Centre for Environmental Education and Community Development (ICENECDEV) advocated for sustainable food systems in mountains at the international Mount Cameroon Race of Hope on 22 February 2020 in Buea, Cameroon.

ICENECDEV has launched an awareness raising campaign on sustainable food systems, focusing particularly on mountain ecosystems. The Race of Hope was a platform for the group to reach a wide audience of more than 20 000 spectators and 500 athletes to bring attention to mountain food systems. ICENECDEV used large banners to spread the word about the need to protect mountain biodiversity for food.

Since July 2018, ICENECDEV has been a partner of the United Nations Environment Programme’s 10-Year Framework of Programmes on Sustainable Consumption and Production Patterns (10YFP). The 10YFP is a global framework for action aiming to enhance international cooperation and advance the implementation of sustainable consumption and production in all countries and regions.

ICENECDEV shared the messages of the 10YFP through this high-level sporting event. The race, a 38 kilometre distance to the peak of Mount Cameroon, is one of Africa’s most famous; it has been a tradition in southwest Cameroon since 1973. The day of the race also included dance performances, local Cameroonian foods and promotion of local tourist sites.

ICENECDEV has been working since 2005 to address key environmental issues relating to social and economic concerns that affect livelihoods and communities in Cameroon and other African countries. The organization uses environmental education to share information, spread awareness and address issues of local, national and global concern: from climate change to biodiversity to food security.
