Argentina announces the ratification of its national mountain committee

14.01.2021

The Government of Argentina announces the official ratification of the Committee for the Sustainable Development of the Mountain Regions of the Argentine Republic.

Established in 2005, a set of public sector institutions and agencies has been working together for over 15 years on the management and sustainable development of Argentina's mountain regions. On 12 January 2021, Argentina's Ministry of Environment and Sustainability announced that the national mountain committee would be officially included within its scope of work and that the Ministry would continue to chair the committee.

The main functions of the committee include:

  • promoting and coordinating policies, programmes and projects on sustainable mountain development;
  • collecting and disseminating information that contributes to sustainable mountain development as well as cultural, scientific, social, economic, recreational and other activities related to mountains;
  • institutional strengthening of actors involved in mountain issues; and
  • promoting the creation of regional mountain committees, among other functions.

The Government of Argentina has been a member of the Mountain Partnership since 2004 and plays an active role in contributing to the sustainable development of the Andean region. Its national mountain committee has been an inspiration and a model for other countries, and its members have always been available to share their experiences to encourage other countries to follow their example.
