Romania celebrates National Mountain Day

27.10.2021

Romania celebrated National Mountain Day 2021 under the theme "Mountains matter! Keep the mountains clean!" The Day is held every year on 14 September, coinciding with the traditional ending of the pasture-grazing season in the Romanian Carpathians.

To highlight this occasion, Romania’s National Agency for Mountain Areas organized 22 clean-up events in 17 mountainous counties between 10 and 18 September 2021 with the support of local authorities.

Participants included staff from the head office of the National Agency for Mountain Areas, local representatives from mountain development offices and centres, schools, children’s clubs, associations and other volunteers.

Celebrations also included two scientific events. The conference "The sustainable development of the mountain area – Trends and perspectives in the post-pandemic period" was co-organized by the National Agency for Mountain Areas, Romanian Mountain Forum and the National Agency for Mountain Rural Development "Romontana" – each a member of the Mountain Partnership – among others. Furthermore, the National Agency for Mountain Area together with the Vâlcea County Library hosted a round table on mountains.

The 2021 activities aimed to raise awareness about the importance of mountains and their resources and about mountain communities. The occasion fostered teamwork between people of different generations, occupations and interests for the protection of nature and a cleaner environment.
