Open-ended Scientific Committee for the International Year of Sustainable Mountain Development 2022 meets

On 16 December 2021, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 2022 the International Year of Sustainable Mountain Development (IYM2022) and invited the Mountain Partnership to facilitate its observance jointly with all relevant organizations.

To ensure that the IYM2022 fully benefits mountain peoples and ecosystems, increasing knowledge about their main challenges and promoting investments toward mountain areas, the Mountain Partnership Secretariat launched an Open-ended Scientific Committee.

The main aim of this Committee is to produce scientifically sound messages to effectively communicate “mountain issues and strengths” to diverse audiences to mobilize attention and resources. The Committee will contribute to overseeing the observance of the IYM2022 and sharing mountain related information and knowledge.

The Committee held its first meeting on Tuesday, 25 January 2022, which was co-chaired by MP Steering Committee member – the Mountain Research Initiative. A summary of the discussions is available here.
