Mountain women from eight countries planning expedition to Mount Aconcagua

21.12.2022

The Mountain Women of the World network is planning its first group expedition as a transnational collective of women-centred mountaineering groups. Mountain women from Argentina, the Plurinational State of Bolivia, Chile, Italy, Kenya, Nepal and the United Republic of Tanzania will gather together to climb Mount Aconcagua on 4–21 February 2023.

At 6 962 metres, Mount Aconcagua in Mendoza, Argentina is the highest mountain in the Americas and one of the world's "Seven Summits". The expedition will consist of a trek to Plaza de Mulas. From there, a smaller group will have the opportunity to continue to the Aconcagua summit through the normal route. Through this expedition, the Mountain Women of the World network aims to encourage more women to become involved with mountains, promoting mountaineering as a tool for collective care, to build humility, resilience, connection, empathy, and reciprocity.

The members of the Mountain Women of the World network include Empowering Women of Nepal, 3 Sisters Adventure Trekking, the Feminist Hiking Collective, Sumá Nativas, Mujeres a la Cumbre, Mountain Women Club, Women Who Hike Africa, Kilimanjaro Women, Cholitas Esaladoras de Bolivia, and Topchu Art Group. Their goal as a collective is to showcase how mountaineering can strengthen economic justice for mountain women and build collective power and solidarity.
