Rob Blair leaves a legacy of mountain programmes

15.04.2015

Rob Blair, founding member of Mountain Studies Institute and Mountain Partnership alternate focal point, passed away on 27 February 2015 at the age of 71. His colleagues remember him as a visionary whose long career in teaching and research on mountains inspired many in the San Juan Mountains.

He founded MSI, an independent non-profit mountain research and education centre established in 2002 in Silverton, Colorado, USA. Blair’s leadership inspired countless community programs and projects that MSI has undertaken to address environmental issues in the San Juan Mountains.

“I think it's fair to say the idea of Mountain Studies was his,” Charlie Burnham, a retired geology professor who was the institute's second president, told a local newspaper. Marcie Demmy Bidwell, Executive Director of Mountain Studies, told the local newspaper that Blair was ‘never afraid of a big idea.’

The Mountain Partnership Secretariat extends its heartfelt condolences to his family and colleagues, noting the loss of a champion of mountains.
