Promoting SMD in 2014

18.05.2015

The Mountain Partnership Secretariat (MPS) reflects on its key achievements in promoting sustainable mountain development (SMD) last year in its 2014 annual report. Using mountain climbing as an analogy to facing SMD challenges, the annual report, called “A Year-long Ascent”, outlines the Secretariat’s work in the areas of advocacy, communication and knowledge management, International Mountain Day, joint action, capacity development, innovation and resource mobilization.

The international advocacy campaign promoted by the MPS last year resulted in the inclusion of three mountain-related targets in the final report submitted by the UN Open Working Group on Sustainable Development Goals, the report underscores. “Working together and speaking with one voice, we made one of our most important achievements yet: three mountain-related targets are expected to ensure concerted sustainable mountain development efforts for at least the next 15 years,” writes Thomas Hofer, MPS Coordinator in his opening message.

The 44-page publication features other highlights, such as mountain family farming being the focus of the International Programme on Research and Training on Sustainable Management of Mountain Areas (IPROMO) and International Mountain Day; offers a sample of the success stories from MP members in the six regions on their quests towards developing mountains sustainably and includes a list of the events the MPS took part in and organized as well as the publications and videos it produced.

Since its establishment in 2002, Mountain Partnership (MP) has been working together to raise awareness of the global importance of mountain ecosystems, improve the lives of mountain peoples and conserve mountainous environments.
