Linking food security to mountains

The annual International Programme on Research and Training on Sustainable Management of Mountain areas (IPROMO) was launched today by Giorgio Ferraris the Mayor of Ormea, Rosalaura Romeo of the Mountain Partnership Secretariat and Michele Freppaz of the University of Turin.
This year’s IPROMO course - the eighth edition - will focus on food security in mountains, looking at the prevailing mountain economic systems, the impact of global changes, the role of soils and water, gender, governance and land tenure issues, just to name a few.
“According to a new study, 915 million peoples live in mountain areas representing 13 percent of the global population,” says Rosalaura Romeo, Mountain Partnership Secretariat. “Of these, one out of three is vulnerable to food insecurity, compared to one in eight in developing countries worldwide.”
The course is held in Ormea and Edolo, both in northern Italy, and targets researchers and technicians from all over the world, providing a technical and scientific overview of the issues related to food security and nutrition in mountain areas. The participants will spend a day visiting EXPO 2015 in Milan and take part in an event called “Rural mountain: worldwide EXtraordinary POtential”. The closing ceremony of the course will also take place at EXPO2015.
The IPROMO programme was created in 2006 by the Mountain Partnership Secretariat of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the University of Turin at the request of several Mountain Partnership members who had identified the lack of mountain related capacity development programmes as a concrete obstacle to the sustainable development of mountains around the world.
This year the course benefits from the patronage of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and is also a collaboration with the town of Ormea, the Institut Agricole Règional of Valle d’Aosta and the University of Milan.
IPROMO aims at strengthening the capacity of countries and institutions that belong to the Mountain Partnership and targets mainly technicians, experts, and decision-makers from areas that are potentially more sensitive to global change impacts.
