Ecosystem-based adaptation in mountains

The global Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA) in Mountains Programme is a partnership among United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), with funding from the International Climate Initiative of the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety (BMUB). In Peru, the programme is commissioned by the Ministry of Environment of Peru (MINAM) and is implemented in the Nor Yauyos-Cochas Landscape Reserve with the support of the National Service of Natural Protected Areas (SERNANP). The activities under the responsibility of IUCN are implemented in partnership with The Mountain Institute (TMI).

UNDP is implementing the above project pilot activities in Tanta, a mountain town situated within the Reserve. Vicuña management, associated with a sustainable management of livestock, is one of the EbA measures applied in this area. These practices promote the production of animal fibers and the restoration of natural pastures and wetlands by preventing soil erosion and contributing to water regulation. The measures also generate income for the local community.
