Making mountain cities resilient

19.08.2015

Alberto Pascual, Director of the non-governmental organization Fundación CoMunidad, member of the Mountain Partnership since 2012, is one of the advocates of the global campaign “Making Cities Resilient: My City is Getting Ready” in the framework of the global meeting of the Focal Points and Advocates of the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR) held on 12-14 August 2015 in Panama City, Panama.

One of the contributions of Alberto Pascual to the discussion was a call to recognize the need in mountains for greater disaster risk reduction, resilience building and tackling climate change in line with the New Ten Essentials, a ten-point checklist to disaster risk reduction in cities.

Ricardo Mesa, Head of UNISDR’s Regional Office for the Americas, which hosted of the first global meeting of Making Cities Resilient advocates, stated: “Advocates are crucially important for our regions, and their contribution in implementing the Making Cities Resilient campaign in the coming years is instrumental. With the adoption of the Sendai Framework, local governments have become even more at the centre of the efforts for building resilience to disasters, and advocates will be our partners in achieving our ambitious goals at the local level”.

The objective of the three-day global meeting was to build understanding and raise awareness on the achievements of the campaign, the Sendai Framework and the World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction (WCDRR), the New Ten Essentials, the Resilient Cities Scorecard and other thematic priorities for global outcomes in risk management.
