In memoriam: Dr Festus D. Kibiri Bagoora

Dear friends and partners, it is with deep sorrow to share the news of the sad demise of our friend and colleague Dr Festus D. Kibiri Bagoora who passed on 19 August 2015 around 5:00pm after a short illness.
“We lost a cornerstone for Africa Sustainable mountain development, the late Dr Bagoora was among the first persons to advocate for mountains in Africa, and he has been part of many initiatives to promote mountains in Africa. He was ambitious and very hard working person. May his soul rest in peace ”, said Dr Sam Kanyamibwa, Executive Director, Albertine Rift Conservation Society (ARCOS).
The late Bagoora was a Ugandan national born in October 1952. He is survived by a widow and six children.
He attained a Master of Science from the University of Toronto, Canada in 1984 and a PhD in 1988 from the University of Toronto, Canada where he specialized in Environmental Geomorphology and Hydrology: Land and soil management; Hydrology of surface and sub-surface waters; Environmental measurements (Meteorological and Boundary-layer Climatological parameters), and Remote sensing of the environment.
Prior his demise, he was the Managing Director/Environmental and Natural Resources Consultant at Nature-RIDD Uganda Limited, a registered non-profit making Nature and Environmental Research Company. Before this, he was the Natural Resource Management Specialist (Soils and Land-Use) at the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), Uganda, an institution he had worked with for a decade.
He was a true champion for mountains and had dedicated so much energy on mountain issues both locally and internationally. From January 2001-2012 he was the Focal Person for the National observance of the International Year of the Mountains 2002, designated by the Fifty-third Session of the United Nations General Assembly 1998, Resolution A/RES/53/24, to provide opportunities and challenges for follow up of Chapter 13 of Agenda 21 of the UNCED, among many other mountain related assignments to his name.
