UNFCCC COP21: Time to take action

17.09.2015

In December, Paris will host the twenty-first session of the Conference of the Parties (COP21) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), an event gathering around 40 000 participants, including country delegates, observers and civil society members. This conference is crucial to find a universal, legally binding agreement to effectively mitigate climate change and boost the transition towards resilient, low-carbon societies and economies.

Different actions are being prepared, to push the mountain issues in the negotiations’ space and urge for concrete engagements by States. The International Mountaineering and Climbing Federation (UIAA) was involved with experts and the international mountain platform Mountain Partnership  into the elaboration, at the international level, of a "Declaration Mountain and Climate Change for COP21” . The aim of the Declaration is to have mountains and current challenges linked to climate change recognized in the negotiations of the COP21.  The Declaration will be circulated to international organizations to be signed and to States, to be promoted and supported in the negotiation sessions.

"It is the role of the UIAA to be an active participant in protecting our mountains. The UIAA highly encourages the governments to support this declaration  in the negotiation sessions, which is a first step to recognize that our mountains need special attention.” said Frits Vrijlandt, UIAA President.

In parallel at the UIAA level, Italian Federation CAI has proposed the adoption of a UIAA Resolution on Climate Change by UIAA member federations at next General Assembly. Complementary to the Declaration, the Resolution aims to help Federations to ask their State Government to defend mountains in the negotiation sessions.
