Mountain events at climate change summit

The Mountain Partnership Secretariat and numerous Mountain Partnership members are organizing side events, photo exhibitions and other events to bring attention to mountains during the 21st session of the Conference of Parties (COP21) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in Paris, France. The purpose is to highlight the challenges faced by mountain communities and to call for urgent action on climate change in these fragile mountain ecosystems during the two-week long COP, also known as the 2015 Paris Climate Conference, which starts on 30 November 2015.

The MPS, represented by Rosalaura Romeo in Paris during COP21, is holding two side events:

-       “Adapting to climate change and building resilient livelihoods in mountain regions”
Organized by the Mountain Partnership Secretariat, Government of Tajikistan and Asociación Civil Oikos (OIKOS) 10 December at 13:15-14:45

-       “Celebrating International Mountain Day 2015: Adapting and building resilience to climate change in mountain communities”
Organized by the Mountain Partnership Secretariat, The Mountain Institute, Government of Lesotho and Colorado State University 11 December at 13:15-14:45

Because of their altitude, slope and orientation to the sun, mountain ecosystems are easily disrupted by variations in climate. Many scientists believe that the changes occurring in mountain ecosystems may provide an early glimpse of what could come to pass in lowland environments.

COP21 is the 2015 annual meeting of all countries that are part of the UNFCCC. This year the conference is expected to define a new international agreement on climate change, which aims to keep global warming below 2°C.
