Developing research center for mountain economy

07.12.2015

Costin C. Kiritescu National Institute for Economic Research of the Romanian Academy with financial support from European Fund for Regional Development is formulating a project to enhance research capacity of the Center for Mountain Economy to develop effective strategies and policies for sustainable development of Romanian mountains.

The Carpathian mountains in Romanian are home to around 16 percent of the country’s population relying on agriculture and livestock for livelihoods. Over the past decades, the agri-food economy based in the mountainous territories – about 31 percent of the national territories – remains understudied.

The project entitled “”Development of research infrastructure for “Costin C. Kiritescu” National Institute for Economic Research, by establishing and developing a Center for Mountain Economy – CEMONT” seeks to address the research gap in understanding key changes occurring in the mountain regions in order to develop sustainable solutions through ensuring sustainable livelihoods while protecting mountain environments and preserving local traditions.

Under the project, the Center for Mountain Economy  (CEMONT) will build research capacities in mountain topics focusing on issues ranging from mountain family farming to mountain products while taking into account large variation in the socio-ecological features that shape economies in the mountain villages. Furthermore, the CEMONT aspires to become a mountain university, attracting students and researchers from across the Carpathian regions and beyond, to receive training and understand research on themes that help contribute in the sustainable development of the Carpathian Mountains.
