Promoting mountain products

17.12.2015

Over 30 mountain producers from over ten mountain regions of the world gathered in New Delhi, India for the exhibition “Mountain High! Festival of Peoples and Products”. The 11-day exhibition was held at the Nature Bazaar space, a venue managed by the NGO Dastkar which traditionally promotes traditional crafts, organic and small scale farming enterprises as well as women cooperatives.

At the opening were: Shyam Khadka, India Representative of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO); Sara Manuelli of the Mountain Partnership Secretariat;  Anita Paul, Director of Pan Himalayan Grassroots Development Foundation; Elbegzaya Batjargal, Programme Officer, Mountain Partnership Central Asia Hub and by Laila Tyabji, founder of Dastkar.

“Mountain products hold great potential to improve local  mountain economies and livelihoods,” says Manuelli.  “We have invited producers from all over the world to showcase their products, exchange stories and share experiences.”

Among the Mountain Partnership members participating were the Altai Republic of the Russian Federation, REDAR from Peru, Fundación CoMunidad from Panama, the Bolivian Institute from Bolivia, the Mountain Institute from Nepal, the Pan Himalayan Grassroots Foundation from India and the Snow Leopard Conservation Foundation.

A workshop dedicated to exchanging good practices, sharing lessons learned and assessing the results on several surveys on the perception of mountain products was held on 18 December.

The event was organized by the Mountain Partnership Secretariat in partnership with Pan Himalayan Grassroots Development Foundation, a voluntary organization working in the Indian Himalayan Region since 1992. The exhibition ran until 28 December.
