Course on mountain ecosystems in Spanish

The Centro Agronómico Tropical de Investigación y Enseñanza (CATIE), Fundación para el Desarrollo de la Cordillera Volcánica Central (FUNDECOR) and ProalSUR, with support from the Mountain Partnership Secretariat, are organizing an international course on mountain ecosystems for professionals working on mountain issues in the public and private sector at the CATIE training centre in Turrialba, Costa Rica. The overall objective of the 12-day course, conducted in Spanish, is to increase knowledge on sustainable development of mountain ecosystems and on approaches to their sustainable management.

Through lectures, discussions, case studies, guest speakers and a field visit, the intensive course will cover the socio-ecology of mountain areas and governance mechanisms for ensuring sustainable development. The course will address a wide range of issues affecting mountain peoples and environments, particularly focusing on the management of mountain ecosystems, democratic governance for sustainability, extractive industries and their implications for mountain economies as well as cross-cutting themes, such as climate change and gender.

The specific objectives of the course are to identify various approaches to a comprehensive understanding of mountain ecosystems (economic-productive, environmental, cultural perspectives); analyse the various components of mountain ecosystems and their interdependence; analyse the various policy instruments and international instruments related goals, conservation, protection and sustainable development of mountain ecosystems; know the various variables’ impact on sustainability such as climate, poverty, water, identity/culture, extractive industries; identify challenges and developments in the management of mountain ecosystems taking into account the current context of climate change; and analyse requirements and institutional considerations for the sustainability of mountain ecosystems.
