Alpine high fire tradition rekindled

High fires are an ancient tradition in the Alps. Beginning in the medieval ages, mountain peoples of Alpine regions used high fires to warn of incoming military threats. In 1988 the tradition was rekindled via several environmental movements. Today, Alpine high fires have become a symbol for the preservation of heritage in Alpine regions and against the degradation of sensitive Alpine ecosystems.

In celebration of this ancient tradition, Mountain Wilderness Germany is organizing a high fire in the Bavarian Alps on 13-14 August 2016. With these fires, Mountain Wilderness Germany aims to encourage Alpine dwellers to commit to sustainable development in Alpine regions.
