New regional mountain committee in Argentina

18.11.2016

The National Mountain Committee of Argentina has issued the 13th edition of its digital newsletter, which announces the formalization of the Regional Committee for Sustainable Mountain Development in Mendoza. Following the 77th Meeting of the Committee for Sustainable Development of Argentina’s Mountainous Regions on 5-6 October 2016 in San Rafael, Mendoza Province, the National Committee achieved one of its objectives of creating a regional committee in Mendoza. This province is partially covered by the Andes mountain range and hosts Aconcagua, the highest mountain in South America at 6 962 metres above sea level.

Participants of the Meeting included several government ministries, as well as representatives of the Mendoza province, the Argentine Geological and Mining Service (SEGEMAR), the Argentine Institute for Snow, Glacier and Environmental Studies (IANIGLA), the Ministry of Energy and Mining (PERMER) and the Argentine Armed Forces. The events included lectures, presentations and working groups.

The newsletter also features two cultural sections, including a photo gallery of mountains in San Rafael and a Patagonian legend called “The Fury of Lanin”. The legend tells the tale of an indigenous chief’s daughter who was sacrificed in order to appease the spirit of a volcano and save her people.
