Championing the global mountain agenda

31.07.2024

This fact sheet is published by the Mountain Partnership Secretariat of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. It highlights the Mountain Partnership’s advocacy activities aimed at increasing global attention and securing tangible commitments for sustainable mountain development. As the only United Nations alliance dedicated to mountains, the Mountain Partnership elevates visibility and political support for the mountain agenda by capitalizing on major global processes. The Mountain Partnership hosts high-level events and collaborates with governments to spotlight mountains in the three major United Nations Rio Conventions on climate change, biological diversity and desertification, the High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development, and other relevant processes. Following the International Year of Sustainable Mountain Development 2022, the UN General Assembly declared 2023–2027 as the “Five Years of Action for the Development of Mountain Regions”. The Mountain Partnership Secretariat coordinates this initiative to address mountain challenges. The Secretariat also coordinates the observance of International Mountain Day which is celebrated on 11 December to raise awareness about the importance of mountains and opportunities and challenges in mountain development. To inspire goodwill towards improving the quality of life in mountain regions, the Mountain Partnership nominates well-known personalities like Ludovico Einaudi and Reinhold Messner to champion sustainable mountain development. The Mountain Youth Hub, supported by the Secretariat, aims to empower youth in mountain regions by providing a platform for developing innovative initiatives, promoting new enterprises and exchanging knowledge. The Secretariat prepares the triennial United Nations Secretary-General report on sustainable mountain development, on behalf of the Food and Agriculture Organization and in collaboration with governments, relevant agencies and non-governmental organizations. To support these advocacy and communication efforts, the Science and Knowledge Advisory Committee of the Mountain Partnership helps promote the science-policy dialogue by identifying research gaps and priorities.
