The 2017/2018 agricultural season was officially launched on 25 October by the President of the Republic of Mozambique, Filipe Nyusi, in Moamba district of Maputo province.

The representative of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations  (FAO) in the country, Castro Camarada, was present at the ceremony, which included planting trees, visiting vegetable production fields and awarding the best producers who stood out throughout the year and had greater production and productivity at the national level.

The President of the Republic urged national and foreign farmers operating in the country to make agriculture a wealth-generating activity for Mozambicans.

According to the Head of State, the overall goal for the campaign that officially started is to supplant production levels from the previous year. In this way, cereal production is expected to rise from 3 million to 3.25 million tons and roots and tubers by 12 percent compared to the 2016/17 season.

The President of the Republic of Mozambique, Filipe Nyusi, also defended that the country should bet on the processing of agricultural products to give them greater market value.

"We must take the bet on agro-processing as a way to add value to our products and ensure that the industrial sector has national raw material," he said.

In his speech, the Representative of FAO in Mozambique reaffirmed "FAO's commitment to supporting the transformation of agriculture as well as contributing to Mozambique with food and nutritional security."
