A formal launch of the Agricultural Season 2015/2016 led by the President of the Republic of Mozambique, Filipe Nyusi, took place in the Administrative Post of Maniamba, District of Lago, Niassa Province.

The Representative of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in Mozambique, Castro Camarada, attended the programme, which included a tree-planting ceremony, a visit to a horticultural farm and the launch of a project aiming to promote the use of the long-handled hoe, as well as a tour of the Agricultural Fair.

The activities reflected the agricultural potential of the region, and were also attended by technical and higher learning institutions, as well as private sector companies operating in the sector, namely input suppliers and others. A service center supported by the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (MASA) was also launched.

Nyusi, in his address, emphasized the Government strategy of "developing specific value chains along key corridors", and emphasized the "need to produce more and increase import substitution for commodities that can be produced nationally".

During the public interaction, FAO Representative Castro Camarada reaffirmed "FAO's commitment to support the transformation of agriculture in the country, as well as to contribute to a food and nutrition secure Mozambique".
