Celebrating the World Environment Day 2019

A platform for action “World Environment Day” which falls on 5th of June every year is the United Nations day for encouraging worldwide awareness and action to protect our environment. Since it began in 1974, the event has grown to become a global platform for public outreach that is widely celebrated in over 100 countries.

The theme Each World Environment Day is organized around a theme that draws attention to a particularly pressing environmental concern. The theme for 2019 is “Air pollution”.

The Government of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar together with various UN agencies, European Union and other development agencies celebrated the World Environment Day at MICC-II, Nay Pyi Taw. The President, Union Ministers, senior Government officials, head of UN agencies, representatives of the embassies and stakeholder organizations, and the students participated the celebration.

The celebration was opened by the President’s announcement of two new policies – the National Environmental Policy and the Myanmar Climate Change Policy. It also involved the awarding of WED competitions winners and a tour to the display booths of the participating organizations.
