Free forestry software in the battle against climate change

10/10/2014

The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has officially launched new software that is expected to help significantly in the fight against climate change. Tropical deforestation and forest degradation are among the largest sources of carbon dioxide emissions caused by humans globally and thus major contributors to climate change, which is why reducing these emissions has become a key goal of the international community. The software will enable countries to conduct comprehensive forest inventories so that they understand the value of their forest resources and how best to manage them in order to combat climate change. While various countries have already been trialling the ‘Open Foris’ software tools, it’s the first time the entire suite of tools will become available to all, helping access to information, knowledge sharing and transparency.
