Priority 3: Greening agriculture, water scarcity and climate action
The Near East and North Africa (NENA) region faces numerous environmental and sociopolitical challenges that have both immediate and long-term effects on the sustainability of the region’s agrifood systems and people livelihoods. High urbanization rate, conflicts, demographic growth, and the associated agriculture intensification methods have resulted in the excess use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides, over-extraction in the fisheries, forestry and ground water resources, widespread rainfed mechanized farming and the expansion of unsustainable irrigation and farming methods. These unsustainable practices along with climate change, if not addressed, will exacerbate the degradation of the region’s limited natural resources, increase vulnerability of its people especially in rural areas and jeopardize the region’s efforts for achieving food security and the SDGs.
