In the province of Chlef, Algeria, the success story of Abderraouf Traiche exemplifies the entrepreneurial potential and leadership spirit of youth.

As a young local businessman, Abderraouf, an engineer in biology, funded “BioPianta”, a natural cosmetics company specializing in vegetable oil extraction and distillation, at the age of 30. However, his ambition reached beyond his own business; he envisioned contributing to the development of his province and driving agri-food innovation. Yet, he faced uncertainty about where to start.

Abderraouf’s journey took a new turn when he crossed paths with an agricultural engineer who introduced him to the Food and Agriculture Organization’s (FAO) project, "Elaboration of a Development Strategy for the Prickly Pear (Opuntia ficus-indica (L.)". The prickly pear program perfectly aligned with BioPianta’s expertise, prompting Abderraouf to embark on his adventure in 2021.

Attending an intensive session held from November 7th to 11th, 2021, Abderraouf gained invaluable skills and insights to improve the productivity and performance of his company. He also initiated the creation of a network among the program participants from different provinces in Algeria, to share their experiences and support each other. This network mainly included prickly pear producers, with a significant representation of women and youth.

“There is no better time than now to start implementing and developing your ideas. Don't be afraid of failure, use it as fuel to push yourself to thrive” said Abderraouf.

Convinced that young people are a driving force for sustainable development, Abderraouf transformed his passion into action by establishing the “Djisr” association. This organization aims to empower rural women through practical training in the production of essential and vegetable oils, the manufacture of natural products, and much more. In doing so, Djisr actively combats unemployment and promotes gender equality. The association’s impact extends beyond Chlef province, positively changing many lives by creating employment opportunities for youth in the agri-food sector and empowering women.

Abderraouf’s inspiring journey shows how the opportunities offered by FAO can act as catalysts for positive change. Participating in the FAO prickly pear program equipped him with vital entrepreneurial skills and specialized knowledge that not only enhanced his own business but also contributed to the development of his region.

Looking towards the future, Abderraouf ardently states, “I later want to acquire a plot of land to cultivate prickly pears and medicinal and aromatic plants, as well as to expand my business to create jobs for young people and women in rural areas.”
