Background
World Bee Day is an official United Nations observance held on May 20 each year since 2018, upon the proposal by the Government of Slovenia. By observing World Bee Day each year, we can raise awareness on the essential role bees and other pollinators play in keeping people and the planet healthy, on the many challenges they face today and what can be done to support, restore and enhance the role of pollinators.
Today bees, pollinators, and many other insects are declining in abundance. This day provides an opportunity for all of us – whether we work for governments, organizations or civil society or are concerned citizens – to promote actions that will protect and enhance pollinators and their habitats, improve their abundance and diversity, and support the sustainable development of beekeeping.
2021 Celebration of World Bee Day
The Permanent Mission of Slovenia to the United Nations and the FAO Liaison Office with the United Nations are organizing an event in New York which will provide space for a short interactive discussion that would link bees and the importance of pollinators with the two upcoming events this year:
- The 15th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP15) to the UN Convention on Biological Diversity in Kunming. It is expected to reshape our relationship with nature and explore a path of harmonious coexistence between man and nature through consultations on the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework.
- The 26th meeting of the Conference of parties of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP26) in Glasgow. It is a pivotal event in how we address climate change, the discussions and decisions on how to increase climate ambition, build resilience and lower emissions will shape the future of our planet.
This event will complement the flagship event of World Bee Day being organized this year in Rome under the theme “Bee engaged: Build Back Better for Bees”
