60th Session of the Commission for Social Development – Inter-session informal preparatory meeting

Hybrid Event, 09/12/2021

Thursday, 9 December | 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM (EST)

The 60th Session of the Commission for Social Development will be convened with the priority theme of “Inclusive and resilient recovery from COVID-19 for sustainable livelihoods, well-being and dignity for all: eradicating poverty and hunger in all its forms and dimensions to achieve the 2030 Agenda”.

The deliberation and outcome of the Commission (policy guidance and recommendations) will be an important input to the HLPF in July 2022. The theme of the 2022 HLPF is “Building back better from COVID-19 while advancing the full implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development”. SDGs 4 (education), 5 (gender), 14 (oceans), 15 (terrestrial ecosystems) and 17 (partnerships), including their interlinkages, will also be reviewed by the HLPF.

At the same time, the COVID-19 demonstrated the critical role of social policy to protect people, especially the most vulnerable, and underscored the need for integrated long-term policy frameworks to recover better from the crisis and to accelerate progress in the implementation of the SDGs. The Commission for Social Development, within its mandates, will contribute to ECOSOC and HLPF, by assisting Member States to simultaneously reduce poverty, hunger, and inequalities, enhance people’s capabilities and resilience, and ensure sustainable livelihoods for all.

The FAO Chief Economist will present on The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World (SOFI) 2021 report, followed by a presentation by the Director of the FAO Division of Inclusive Rural Transformation and Gender Equality, on social protection and its effect on rural areas and agriculture.
