FAO at the ECOSOC Financing for Development Forum 2024

22/04/2024 - 25/04/2024

Theme: “Embarking on the path toward the Fourth International Conference on Financing for Development, FfD4”

The ECOSOC Financing for Development (FfD) process stands as a pivotal avenue, providing a distinctive opportunity to foster alignment among United Nations Member States, UN agencies, International Financial Institutions, and non-state actors. This convergence is particularly focused on crucial facets of finance, including but not limited to domestic public resources, international development cooperation, international trade, and debt. FAO, recognizing the significance of these issues, has committed substantial engagement in this process, effectively raising awareness on matters related to the mitigation and prevention of food crises and the transformation of agrifood systems.

In a landmark move, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) adopted Resolution A/RES/77/156 in December 2022, pertaining to the "Follow-up to and implementation of the outcomes of the International Conferences on Financing for Development." This resolution outlines a momentous decision to convene the Fourth International Conference on Financing for Development in 2025. The overarching objective of this conference is to comprehensively assess the progress made in implementing key frameworks such as the Monterrey Consensus, the Doha Declaration, and the Addis Ababa Action Agenda. The conference aims to identify obstacles and constraints hindering the achievement of agreed-upon goals and objectives, proposing actionable initiatives to overcome these challenges. Additionally, it seeks to address emerging issues in the context of financing for development.

FAO, attuned to the evolving landscape, has set a primary objective of contributing to enhanced and tailored financing solutions for the mitigation and prevention of food crises while transforming agrifood systems. The agency is strategically positioning itself to actively engage in the processes leading up to the 2025 Fourth International Conference on Financing for Development. The underlying goal is to ensure that the forthcoming commitments in finance for development generate an enabling environment conducive to the accomplishment of FAO's objectives.
