Briefing on the preparations for the World Humanitarian Summit delivered by Ms Indira Joshi, Liaison Officer

Your Excellencies

Distinguished colleagues

Ladies and Gentlemen

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations is proud to be part of this historic landmark journey towards transforming aspiration and hope into reality.

FAO has been actively participating in the preparations, involved primarily in the work streams of natural disasters and climate change; ending needs; and humanitarian financing.

In the context of the Summit, FAO will present organizational commitments that support the Core Responsibilities for Action.

Our primary focus is to increase resilience of livelihoods to threats and crises, support the adoption of sustainable food systems and reduce rural poverty.

FAO will therefore mobilize its longstanding technical expertise, knowledge base and complementarity with other stakeholders in the field of food security, nutrition and agriculture.

Together with our partners, we shall support integrated, multiyear approaches to resilience building, working across the humanitarian and development pillars.

We also emphasize the importance of leveraging local capacities and empowering people (the men, women, youth and the elderely) to be the central drivers in building their own resilience.

In closing, Istanbul presents an historic opportunity to reshape the way the global community works to support the humanitarian needs of the future.

Thank you
