Accelerating Progress on SDG4 for the Most Marginalized and Vulnerable Children

The Office of the President of the General Assembly in collaboration with FAO, Save the Children, FHI 360 and UNESCO organized a breakfast event under the theme, “Accelerating progress on SDG 4 for the most marginalized and vulnerable children: an informal panel discussion on evidence, solutions, and youth perspectives.”

This informal discussion was heldin the margins of the High Level SDG Action Event on Education , convened by the President of the General Assembly on 28 June 2017 at the UN Headquarters in New York.

Speaking at the event on the link between nutrition, education, and early childhood development, Carla Mucavi, Director of FAO Liaison Office to the United Nations, highlighted the importance of healthy school meals in helping children learn at their fullest potential and also emphasized that school meals can be used as a powerful tool for the economic and social development of local communities by linking school meals to public purchases schemes from family farmers. Ms. Mucavi also introduced the United Nations Food Gardens initiative by the UNSRC Gardening who facilitated the participation of the youths from New York at the event and had a chance to explain their role in contributing to quality education.

This event brought together the high level representatives of Member States, the UN System, civil society and other international organizations.
