Chile’s President Piñera and FAO Director-General agree on the importance of healthy food for healthy lives

24/09/2019

President Sebastián Piñera of Chile and FAO Director-General Qu Dongyu met today for talks that focused on the need for people to have access to a choice of nutritious food.

During their meeting on the margins of the UN General Assembly, President Piñera explained how Chile’s food labelling law, which entered into force in 2016, requires foods that exceed specified limits of sodium, sugar and saturated fats to be clearly labeled as such, and imposes certain restrictions on advertising unhealthy foods to children.

Qu said he was a strong believer in access to healthy food in order for people to live healthy, productive lives, a view shared by President Piñera.

Qu thanked President Piñera whose country hosts the FAO Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean which has been located in Santiago since 1955.

The FAO Director-General said that if time allows, he is keen to visit Chile in December to attend the 2019 United Nations Climate Change Conference, also known as COP25.
