Exploring Panama’s potential for peri-urban agriculture development

27/09/2019

FAO Director-General and Alejandro Ferrer Minister of Foreign Affairs for Panama met today in talks that focused on strengthening cooperation.

During their meeting on the side-lines of the 74th Session of the United Nations General Assembly, Ferrer outlined initiatives in his country based on local agricultural production to supply school-feeding schemes.

This is an area where FAO has considerable expertise and the Director-General said the agency is ready to support Panama’s efforts. He noted Panama’s potential to diversify its agri-food sector and to further explore peri-urban agricultural production.

Qu also outlined FAO’s new Hand-In-Hand Initiative, which prioritizes targeted work that benefits people in the world’s most vulnerable regions including small island developing states, least developed and landlocked countries.
