Liechtenstein’s Prince Alois interested in FAO’s work on the links between agriculture, heritage and innovation

During a meeting today Alois, Hereditary Prince of Liechtenstein, and FAO Director-General Qu Dongyu discussed ways the agricultural sectors can be modernized to make more efficient use of natural resources while still remaining respectful of local traditions.

In particular, Alois  expressed interest in FAO’s designation of Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (GIAHS). Qu explained how this initiative recognizes outstanding landscapes of aesthetic beauty that combine agricultural biodiversity, resilient ecosystems and a valuable cultural heritage.

Alois and the FAO Director-General, who met on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, also discussed ways farming can be upgraded through innovation - including technologies making use of biogases, a renewable energy resource from raw materials such as agricultural and food waste, manure, sewage and plant material.

They agreed that agricultural innovation is the key to help Liechtenstein achieve a zero emissions goal, with Qu noting that FAO has considerable experience in this field.

The Director-General also encouraged Liechtenstein to  join FAO and said he looked forward to working together.
