Europe and Central Asia: World hunger falls to 795 million

18 June 2015, Budapest/Rome--- As the monitoring period of the Millennium Development Goals comes to an end, new analysis has been released today which gives a regional perspective on figures in the latest 'State of Food Insecurity in the World' report. The annual report was just released by the UN's three Rome based food agencies this week. During the past three decades, Europe and Central Asia has achieved the Millennium Development Goal target of halving the proportion of people affected in the region. As a whole, the region is one of the lead commodity exporters in the world, yet despite production growth and positive trends in food security nutrition issues are still prevalent. With 53 member countries the region is greatly diverse in terms of issues facing in terms of securing food security for all.

David Sedik, a Senior policy officer with FAO's Regional office for Europe and Central Asia in Budapest, Hungary, provides some insight into the issues. (interview conducted by Sandra Ferrari)
