Tuning into the role of Rural Radio in Agriculture and Development
13 February 2014, Rome – Today many are celebrating World Radio Day across the globe. This international day, endorsed by the UN and led by the United Nations Education Scientific Cultural Organization (UNESCO), is prompting listeners to celebrate one of the most accessible and significant mediums of the information age. Today - radio users, enthusiasts, makers and audiences can use the opportunity of this day to encourage major broadcasters and community radio networks to promote access to information, freedom of expression and gender equality over the airwaves. All of these issues are embedded in the very existence of this technology. And as radio continues to evolve in the digital age, it remains the medium that reaches the widest audience worldwide. Let us celebrate.

Riccardo DelCastello is a Communication for Development Officer at FAO. In the following interview he explains the role of rural radio in communities in Africa and elaborates on the significance of this medium in the context of agricultural development.
