Greening wood energy to mitigate climate change and improve rural livelihoods
Greening the wood energy sector holds a vast potential for reducing global greenhouse gas emissions and improving rural livelihoods. Eva Müller, Director of FAO's Forestry Policy and Resources Division says most of the wood used for firewood or charcoal are produced unsustainably, and inefficient use of fuel wood leads to overuse and poses health threats. Müller explains that greening the charcoal value chain and applying sustainable forest management practices are essential for mitigating climate change while maintaining the access of households to renewable energy.
